Laptops have become extremely popular because they are so versatile. They are portable, small, lightweight, and come with an array of built in devices and programs. The equipment that is built into them makes it easy to connect to the Internet.
While most laptops automatically connect to the Internet, they can also serve as a router to connect other computers to the Internet. This is not something many people know how to do or even understand. There may not be times when you will even need to do this, but it's a good thing to know just in case.
This is really only necessary when you're in need of a second router for a desktop not in the same area as your original router. You will need Ethernet chords, a hub, and your laptop of course. If you have these simple tools, you are ready to set up your makeshift network.
You will first need to find the Ethernet chords. You will only need two and many people have a few extra on hand. If you don't, it wouldn't hurt to buy a few, as they are very inexpensive.
Once you have these chords, plug one into your laptop. The other end of this chord will plug into one of the outlets on the hub/switch. The other chord will plug into your other computer with the other end again plugged into an outlet on the hub/switch.
This is all that needs to be done with the chords. You will now need to create a network on your laptop. This should be pretty easy and most new laptops may do it automatically or guide you through it. After the network is connected, you can connect to the wireless signal from your wireless router.
With the network you just created, the Internet will be able to reach your second desktop computer. The laptop is linked to this computer via the new network. Since the laptop will also be connected to the wireless Internet, your new desktop will also receive this signal.
While this may seem like a silly piece of information, it can be of great use to those stuck in a sticky situation. There are times when you may just need a temporary Internet connection and this will do the trick. It's amazing what kinds of things you can rig up with just a few pieces of old computer equipment.
