Attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder, or ADHD, is a very serious disease that has been diagnosed more frequently each year, it seems. As a parent you may find the symptoms of ADHD a bit frustrating to assess. Of course only a specialist can make the best diagnosis. However, the fact is that there is a wide range of symptoms that can become manifest in a child. Often times the key is to keep an eye on the overall situation as it concerns your child and possible ADHD. There are alot of different things that can affect this disorder and just as many treatment options. This article will describe to you several of the symptoms of ADHD. However you must realize this is not a complete list of symptoms there are many others.
ADHD symptoms are not confined to children of a certain age and neither are they the same from child to child. Many ADHD children have a tendency to loose things, which of course has driven parents crazy for years. Of course no one is exempt from this, but their is an obvious difference in the case of a child with ADHD.
Constantly loosing the things they need is simply normal for a child with ADHD. Children tend to spend most of their time in school or at play. So of course the behavior of loosing things will show up here. It is common then that they will loose their favorite toys, needed supplies and of course their homework. Children who appear normal will sometimes have a difficult time maintaining sufficient attention during certain tasks or play time. And it is also normal for a child to become easily frustrated with something For normal behavior the person's interest and attention will begin to wane. However, the average person will take into account how important the task is and what that task is. If it's not important, then we think you'll see more of a drop in attention. The average person will be able to keep their attention on important tasks until the task is completed.
As a child ages they become more involved in social activities, and this is when the symptoms will begin to affect the child more. So when you see your older child being inattentive too much, and especially in situations where it should not be happening, then that could be cause for concern. For the most part, the older child is doing things he or she likes to do. Household chores and responsibilities are not included in this of course.
So if your child is engaged in some favored activity, and you see a high level of inattentiveness, then pay attention to that. Pay attention, to see if this behavior is common for all activities. Once again the length of time this has been going on is also important. These questions and their answers should reveal to you where your child is.
When these behaviors are continually observed over time, the possibility that your child has ADHD becomes more real. If the behavior has not been observed for 6 months or so, then other avenues should be investigated first. If your child meets these criteria, then it is time for you to seek professional help on the matter. Your doctor is the best place to start, and they may refer your child onto a specialist.
