Street wear became popular in the 80's. It has roots in West Coast of America. It gained popularity initially with the community of surfers, skaters, and hip-hop youngsters.
One of the important things about this outlook was of the vintage-style sneakers as well. It could be related to everyone's favourite Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. This look consisted of over-sized T shirts, sweat shirts, dark denim, and classic sneakers.
The street wear was all about defining who you are and not what you wear. It spoke to the young audience globally, who were angry and rebellious and wanted a change in their lives. It gave them a medium of expression through which their feelings could be unleashed.
The self expression came in form of flashy colours and big prints. The first label that sprung up made such a ripple that many more labels were created in its wake. It had managed to make one statement: that street wear was not just a fad, it had come to stay.
The sector offered great profitability. So the industry could now move on and take the next step. Many labels formed linkages with the Japanese businesses.
The industry had joined hands with the Japanese business enterprises. Good for the industry was that American products had great demand with the Japanese youth. The Japanese designers integrated the sub culture with their own toys and gadgets and with this customization the street wear gained immense popularity with the Japanese.
This was an era of great energy. The street wear varied from culture to culture. It spoke about the topics that were close to the youth the most.
By the 1990's the street wear movement had penetrated to Europe. The youth there wanted to try on something new, and street wear gave them a new medium of self-expression. From Europe many more brands wear came up and joined the international scene.
