Opportunities to find a job in just about any field are prevalent. However, the hottest jobs in Utah business today are related to the energy and technological industries.
Tourism had previously been considered Utah's primary industry, given the natural beauty of the state. Vacationers are attracted by the variety of outdoor activities from skiing (both snow and water) to hiking, camping, rafting in all of Utah's national parks, including the north rim of the Grand Canyon. Tourism is staying strong, but the tech industry is seeing rapid growth, providing quite a number of opportunities for people in the Beehive State.
According to the report of the Utah Department of Workforce Services (DWS), Utah business has a very promising job outlook. Even though the national recession has taken its toll on every state, Utah seems to be weathering the storm a little worse for the wear but overall doing alright. Their unemployment figures are a solid 3% below the national average.
While the hospitality industry may be suffering the most since people are reluctant to travel, the computer software businesses seem to be overall fairly healthy. Additionally, because of Utah's wide open spaces, the state is a perfect place for companies to produce alternate energy sources by using such resources as wind or water and with the current Federal Government stimulus plan being implemented, Utah is on the receiving end of significant funds to promote this clean technology.
The DWS has listed the top 10 Utah business job markets that are in demand. They include: customer and personal service; teaching the English Language (this is important given Utah's high number of immigrants); Mathematics; Clerical; Education Training; Computers and Electronics; Administration and Management; Sales and Marketing; Mechanical; and Psychology. These jobs will probably require you to take additional classes in order to learn the basics of the jobs, but with Utah's top notch universities, this is a highly accessible option. So, as you can see, Utah has carved itself in to the workings of our national economy and can no longer be written off as having no industry.
