Website Directory Networks And Their Value
Go to: Previous Article Next Article
With regards to promoting a website, one of the primary stops for a lot of webmasters are web directories. While there's a mixed opinion on the value of web directories, in comparison with more reputed article directories, there has been a surge of web directory networks in recent times. It is the majority of these directory networks which I will address in the following paragraphs.
If we take note of Google, which in all honesty we should, then everyone knows quality is paramount to success. How do we know this? Well, Matt Cutts said it naturally! Seriously, Matt Cutts is absolutely correct. What's superior, publishing to one thousand free directories which are hosted on on the same network and are interlinked or publishing to a sole quality directory? I would personally spend my time submitting to a single quality web directory any day of the week.
Owning a link directory is a lot of work. The volume of energy that is placed into a directory can help determine its quality. If it offers low editorial values, quality is thrown out the window and that directory will become nothing more then a link farm.
Most website directory networks reside on a single server, that is already shared with hundreds or thousands of other websites. Once these directory networks get huge, and get some traffic from the various free directory lists, the server can crawl to a turtles pace. This is simply not acceptable for anybody, specifically the blameless folks that happen to be hosting on that server.
Most of the web directory networks running nowadays are set to auto accept all submissions. By producing a cron job at a chosen time, all listings are instantly approved. The editor has been exchanged by code which releases the floodgates to everybody under the sun. Categories instantly become cluttered with irrelevant listings and non desirable listings find their way into the directory too.
So the question begs, why would people create such networks? The bulk of the networks out there have tactically positioned ads. You know, the advertisements nearly on top of the submit link button. Someone inadvertently clicks the advertisement then presto, that directory owner earns money. Multiply this by hundreds or even thousands of directories, and you have a good deal of daily clicks. The main problem is that the bounce rate for these clicks are likely high, and most of these directory owners are the same people complaining they happen to be smart priced by an ad network.
Normally speaking, the advantage of directory networks is short lived for its owner. Traffic is derived from being included in a free directory list, but as soon as that directory is no longer fresh, the website traffic it gets decreases to just a trickle. This is the reason why directory network operators are motivated to design many more directories. They require that steady supply of visitors to yield the ad revenues they seek.
The gospel truth is that I have observed very few web directory networks that continue more then their first year. These web directory networks ordinarily close when their owner figures out that there is hardly any revenue growth, but a continuous cycle of difficult work. As entrepreneurs, we only have a limited amount of resources. Will submitting to directory networks benefit us in our advertising efforts or are we better off searching for the true gems which might still be in the rough? After observing so many web directory networks topple, it is my feeling that internet marketers may be best served by submitting to superior article and web directories instead.
