Alzheimer disease was first described by Dr. Alois Alzheimer in 1906 after performing an autopsy on the brain of one of his patients. Till date, this disease has no cure. The patient who is a victim of this disease suffers a loss of mental agility. A trained doctor can determine whether an individual has developed this disease or not through Alzheimer disease test.
The Alzheimer disease test conducted on patients determines the severity of the disease. This is not a test to identify possible causes or determine a particular type of treatment for the victims. Usually, to confirm whether an individual has fallen prey to Alzheimer, a neuropsychological session takes place between the doctor and the patient. During the session, the patient undergoes abstract thinking, problem-solving and vision-motor coordination tests. Since this disease develops gradually to put an end to the mental functioning of an individual, this Alzheimer disease test will let the doctor measure the severity of the problem.
To know the extent of the disease, the patient is required to undergo an extensive medical examination. The doctor usually checks the patient’s eyesight, blood pressure and examines the heart beat. The Alzheimer disease test includes taking the blood and urine samples of the patient. Other tests involve checking the patient’s liver function, blood count, glucose levels, etc. These tests are usually performed to confirm whether the loss of metal agility is the result of this disease or the side effects of medicines which the patient is taking for other physical ailments.
The Alzheimer disease test also requires the patient to go through a brain scan. As suggested by the doctor, the patient undergoes a MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) or CT scan. Based on the reports of these clinical tests, the physician will inform the patient whether he or she is suffering from this disease or not. In contrast to this disease, allergies can be easily treated with the help of common allergy testing methods. Allergies are a natural reaction of our immune system trying to defend our body against the invasion of foreign particles.
Allergy reactions are very difficult to determine. It usually involves several allergy testing procedures to determine the cause of the allergy. The skin prick or scratch test is the most common test performed to determine the factors causing allergy. This is usually done by injecting a small amount of the substance suspected to cause the allergy on the skin of the patient to provoke the allergic reaction. This allergy testing procedure usually takes only 30 minutes as the body reacts instantly if there is any allergic reaction.
Another common allergy testing method is the intradermal method. This is quite similar to the prick and scratch method. The only difference between these two is that in the intradermal method, the suspected allergens are injected directly into the blood stream to invoke the necessary reaction. It takes about 30 minutes for any reaction to surface on the skin. Besides these tests, blood or RAST allergy testing is another method to determine an allergic reaction. In this test, the level of IgE antibodies is measured as these antibodies are only present when there is an allergic reaction in the body.
