Frequent trips to a groomer can be a drain on your wallet, especially if your dog requires regular haircuts. You can save money by purchasing your own dog clippers and giving a trim at home. For a basic haircut, you can easily do it yourself.
Finding the right set of clippers is fairly easy, and a simple online browse or trip to the pet store will find you what you need. Choose a set that has several different guards for the blade, as this will help you trim the hair to the desired length. Other helpful items to have on hand are a leash, scissors, and a sturdy table on which your dog can stand and is of a comfortable height for you to work. Spread out a sheet or towels to catch the hair, or work in an area that can be easily swept up when you are finished.
Keep in mind that if your dog hates going to the groomer, he probably will not like it any more at home! The sound of the clippers can be vary scary for some pets, and without the experience of a groomer, the results could be less than desirable. If you still want to try, go slowly, and ensure that you are not stressing your dog out.
It is always a good idea to secure your dog to the table using a leash and collar. Not only will it keep them from running away, it will help you keep control of the situation. Ensure that your dog cannot slip and fall off the table and be choked by the collar.
Select a guard for the blade that will give you the results you want. For very short cuts, no guard is necessary. Start at the neckline, working toward the tail, in gentle, slow sweeps. The blade can become hot as you use it, so be sure to stop frequently and check that it is not too hot. A groomer's cooling spray is available that will instantly cool the blade when applied. Using the recommended lubricant regularly will also help keep the blade in good shape.
If you encounter a mat while trimming, work slowly around the edges of it. Never try to pull it off or force the trimmer under it as the skin beneath can be sensitive, causing your pet pain in the process.
When it comes to doing the paw areas, take your time. Pets can have ticklish feet just like people, and it may be difficult to trim these areas. Bending the leg so that the bottom of the paw faces up will give you a good view of the area, and may make your pet cooperate as he will be off balance.
Giving your dog a small break, a treat, and a trip outside at this point is always a good idea. It can give the clippers a chance to cool before you begin working on the face and neck. These areas can be tricky to clip, and most dogs do not like it! Again, patience is the key to doing a proper job.
Hold your pet around the muzzle, and use gently pressure to tilt the head up. This gives you access to the neck area. Proceed slowly to finish the face, taking care around the ears and eyes. Scissors can be used if necessary, but proceed slowly and carefully.
Once you have trimmed your pets fur at home a few times, you and your dog will become comfortable with the process. It need not be a difficult task providing your dog is cooperative, and you use patience.
