If you are insterested in learning about the benefits of clipless pedals, you probably want to know about what they actually are and how they work. Clipless pedals were designed to take place of the older style pedals with toe clips. Toe clips were the tradtional way to attach a pedal to a riders feet for added traction on the pedal. To understand the benefits of clipless pedals, it is important to see why having your feet attached to the pedal is better than being tied to it.
Traditionally, bicycles are known to be moved by pressing down with each leg on the pedals. This downward movement creates more of the power in a pedal stroke, however once the pedal reaches the bottom of its travel, it cannot create more power until it reaches the top again. When your foot is attached to the pedal, you can create more power by creating a pulling pressure on the pedal durring its up turn. Pedaling efficiency is then doubled due to 2 extra strokes in created power. This type of benefit can be gained with both a clipless and a toe clip pedal, but the clipless pedal has a larger advantage.
One of the most obvious benefits of the clipless pedal is the ease at which the foot can be removed from the pedal. This alone makes clipless pedals much safer than toe clips because when using toe clips, you must fasten and tighten the straps while the bike is in motion. The can prove to be very dangerous when coming to a stop as the straps on the toe clip will need to be loosened, where as the clipless pedals can be released with a simple outward motion of the heel.
Another benefit of the clipless pedal is the range of motion that engineers have created. During a pedal stroke, the foot moves slightly in its motion from side to side. Each persons movement in this respect is different, however, due to the engineering of the pedals, these motions are allowed by the pedal, while still holding a firm grip on the foot. This feature helps with preventing stress on ankle and foot joints, making for a very comfortable ride. Older toe clip pedals do not allow this range of motion.
Clipless pedal shoes, or cleats, have also come a very long way in the pedal game. Many are very comfortable, light, and you can still walk comfortably in them even with the cleat attached. This is great for people who casually ride to places or commute to work, because the shoes can be worn all day without having to carry replacements.
There are many different types of clipless pedals available today that can fit almost any need in the cycling world. Buying online will always be cheapest, but it is good to have an inperson look. I would consult my local bike shop for more information.
