It was a year of overwhelming ups and downs for singer/actress Demi Lovato. The Camp Rock celebrity checked directly into rehabilitation in January of 2011, preceding an event with a performer while on tour alongside The Jonas Brothers. The 3 month long stretch has turned the Disney celebrity into a much healthier, stronger person that girls can look to as being a role model. She seemed to be exceptionally open about her challenges with being bi-polar, with the eating disorders and self-mutilating. Demi Lovato's battle with bulimia started when she was just 8 years of age as a result of kids started teasing her with regards to her body weight. Demi shared with US Weekly, "I was compulsively overeating when I was 8 years old. So, I guess, for the past ten years, I have had a really unhealthy relationship with food."
While Demi Lovato's family attempted to get her help for the illness, her depression worsened and by the age of eleven she started cutting herself. "It was a way of expressing my own shame, of myself, on my own body," she says to US Weekly. "I was matching the inside to the outside. And there were some times where my emotions were just so built up, I didn't know what to do. The only way that I could get instant gratification was through an immediate release on myself."
Matters just got more painful soon after signing up for The Jonas Brothers' tour in late summer of 2010, where by ex Joe Jonas had been frequently within reach. Demi set about performing live shows with an empty belly and seriously started to lose her voice from purging. Affairs had reached a point where Demi broke down and took out her frustration and hurt out on a person close to her. "I was self-medicating. I was not taking medication for depression, and I literally was so emotionally whacked out that I took it out on someone that meant a lot to me." Demi Lovato takes complete responsibility for her ways and regrets hurting a good friend, both physically and mentally.
This was when that her relatives and friends intervened. These individuals suggested she obtain treatment. Demi instantaneously dropped out of the tour and moved into the Timberline Knolls facility in Illinois.
"For the first time in my life, I started to feel. A picture of my little sister on my little bulletin board was one of the main things that kept me going. I just kept thinking, 'OK, set this example for your little sister."
Even though Demi has finished her treatment plan and is feeling better than ever before, Demi acknowledges that her food issue is going to be an issue she will need to worry about every day for the rest of her existence. "There have been times when I definitely have been tempted to get rid of my dinner," demi stated to Seventeen Magazine. "But I will deal with it for the rest of my life because it's a life-long disease. I do not think there is going to be a day when I do not think about food or my body, but I'm living with it, and I wish I could tell young girls to find their safe place and stay with it."
