When you think about the cities famous for their music, the names that come to mind will probably be New York, Los Angeles or Nashville. You should add one more name to this list and the name is Boulder, Colorado. Ever since the Astronauts came on the scene in the 1960s, Boulder has been the base for a recording and live music industry that is flourishing and thriving. Despite the misgivings of local residents, the music scene is sizable when you consider the size of the city. It is just a question of adjusting your expectations to realistic levels to fit in with the local scene.
Boulder has always been fortunate to have clubs that attract the best musical talent and places like "Sweet Lunacy" are special for music fans that are slightly older. For the past 10 years, the Fox Theatre, which is now being refurbished, has been important. However, in the 1970s, Tulagi on the Hill featured the Eagles just before they recorded their first album and was also the site for the first ever performance by the cult group ZZ Top. The Boulder Theater as well as Chautauqua Auditorium continue to be venues for great musical acts especially in the summer.
The lifeblood of any local music scene is the supply of young local musicians and Boulder has plenty of them in addition to a large number of music fans. The first local group of note was the Astronauts in the 1960s that performed surf music instrumentals. One group that has had plenty of staying power is Flash Cadillac and the Continental Kids. They epitomized the new wave of nostalgia for rock 'n roll music and featured in performances in movies such as "American Graffiti" as well as TV shows such as "Happy Days.". Now based in Colorado Springs, they continue to entertain the people of Boulder. A spin-off band from this group called the 4Nikators is also active in the region of Boulder.
Meanwhile, Boulder became a popular base for a number of well-known musicians who were famous throughout America. These included Richie Furay [formerly of Buffalo Springfield) and brought his songwriting abilities and his voice to the highly regarded group Poco. Stephen Stills moved to Gold Hill just outside Boulder and even became volunteer member of the fire department. Another prominent member of the local musical establishment was Joe Walsh formerly of the James Gang. Meanwhile, Jim Guercio's Caribou Ranch Studios which is located in nearby Nederland was also a magnet for famous musicians ranging from Elton John to Chicago.
