When it comes to playing guitar solos there are a couple of things you absolutely can't live without. The Pentatonic Scale is clearly one of those things. The most used scale on the guitar by far. In fact pros and guitar gods alike have been using this scale for decades to play many of the classic solos we all love.
The pentatonic scale rules for quite a few reasons. There isn't a style that you can't play with it as long as you learn how to use it properly. A real gem if ever there was one and luckily for us anyone can learn how to sound great using this scale.
This isn't the only scale you'll ever learn but will certainly form the bulk of your vocabulary as a blues guitarist. It's also really helpful to know which notes you can bend into using this scale.
Luckily the notes of the pentatonic falls very comfortably under the fingers. It's a dream to play it, really. Unless of course you try to learn all 5 patterns at once when you're still not able to use 1 pattern properly.
Here are the 5 boxes for the Minor Pentatonic Scale. As you can see they fit into each other and span the whole neck.

And here are the five shapes for the Major Pentatonic. Same deal as Minor Pentatonic. All patterns interlock perfectly.

Except for the root notes these patterns are exactly the same. Great news because you don't actually have to learn any new shapes. Just changing the root notes results in a totally different formula of how the notes are laid out on the guitar.
One more bonus about the Minor Pentatonic Scale is that it's hard to play a wrong note. In fact if you learn how to use it properly you can make every note sound awesome! Spending some time learning which notes you can bend from and into will give you the added advantage of really nailing the changes and the chord tones.
The 7 note boxes have real dense sounds while the Pentatonic scale has a nice wide and open sound that work almost in any musical situation. Remember to learn some classic licks as this will help you to develop the much needed vocabulary. Learning classic licks will help you to make sense of the scale and you'll be learning the same language that players who have mastered the guitar before us learnt. You should then jam them over a backing track and make those new licks your own. Remember to have fun and just go for it!
