The Holland Lop is a breed of rabbit that originated in the Netherlands. In 1979, this breed of rabbits was recognized by the American Rabbit Breeders' and in 1964 by the Association Netherlands' Governing Rabbit Council. Although they sometimes have somewhat doglike tenacity, they are known for their nonaggressive behavior and sweet temperament. They make very good house pets.
Probably the most popular rabbit in history is the Easter Bunny. The Easter Bunny has never really been clearly defined, although the tales of his existence have been part of folklore for numerous years. Everyone has a different opinion of what the Easter Bunny really looks like but if he is anything like other rabbits, he has to eat and the proper diet is important to all rabbits including the Easter and Holland Lops. They should also have fresh water available.
Rabbit pellets should be the primary diet of your Holland Lop. They can also eat hay and some vegetables. Usually, the common recommendation is for every pound of your Holland Lop, they should be fed one ounce of pellets. Therefore, a five pound Holland Lop should be fed five ounces of rabbit pellets. Holland Lops that are less than four months old can eat as much as they want. Good quality rabbit pellets are usually a minimum of 16 percent fiber and between 16 percent and 18 percent protein. Rabbit pellets can cause illness for your rabbit if they become moldy or spoil. You should only purchase one month's worth sufficient rabbit pellets at a time.
Another regular part of your Holland Lop's diet should be hay. Hay can help to reduce blockages and hairballs in your Holland Lop's intestines which can kill your Holland Lop. . Timothy hay is the most preferred kind of hay. Timothy hay will provide the lowest levels of calcium and the best fiber. Another kind of hay that is low in fiber and high in calcium is Alfalfa hay. Usually, Alfalfa is one of the ingredients in rabbit pellets. Although straw has little nutritional value, it can be fed to your Holland Lop.
Holland Lops love sweets and although they can be fed many different kinds of treats these treats need to be limited to small portions only two or three times each week. You shouldn't provide treats to your Holland Lop that have been treated with pesticides or chemical fertilizers. Holland Lops shouldn't be fed treats if they are less than six months old. You should watch your Holland Lop's droppings to make sure that they are solid for rabbits that older than six months old.
