36,000 acres may seem like a lot of terrain to some individuals, but Bryce Canyon may be Utah's smallest national park. Zion and Grand Canyon National Parks tend to be the more popular neighboring national parks, potentially making Bryce Canyon an oversight by some but a highly appreciated gem by all who do visit. It may be small when compared to those larger parks, but you'll find size doesn't matter as the fabulous views are second to none. One of the main attractions is the large Bryce Amphitheater. The Paiute Indians once thought of the rock formations to be that of the Legend people of the historical past, who, guilty of bad deeds, were therefore turned to stone. True or not, trekking on one of the Amphitheater's four primary trails will offer you the chance to view the sculpted rocks from close up.
Running for about 5.5 miles along the cliff above the Bryce Amphitheater, is the Rim Trail. This amazing trail promises plenty of excellent vistas, and it connects you with the five central viewing points of interest along the rim. Between the Sunrise and Sunset viewing points, it's flat enough for wheelchair accessibility.
The Queen's Garden Trail is a loop trail beginning and then ending at Fairyland Point from where it runs below the Bryce Rim for just over one and a half miles in one direction. It is one of the least difficult of the trails. You'll get some fabulous views from this trail such as seeing the Queens Castle and Queen Victoria rock formations on its path.
Another circular trail is The Navajo Loop Trail, which begins and ends at Sunset Point, running below the Bryce Rim for a little less than 1 1/2 miles. Along the way, it passes through a narrow opening between stunning wall faces known as "Wall Street". Also visible from this walk are the rock formations know as The Silent City, Temple of Osiris and Thor's' Hammer. This is a fascinating trail to be on as you walk along finding all of these terrific formations.
The most strenuous of the four trails is the Fairyland Loop Trail. Its an eight mile trail making it also the longest. Beginning at Fairyland Point, goes down into Fairyland Canyon, goes up to the China Wall, followed by a stretch along the Rim Trail taking you back to your starting point at Fairyland Point. There are very steep descents along this trail, making it one of the more difficult hikes. The Tower Point Junction, leading to the Tower Bridge formation, is located on the trail's Fairyland Canyon portion.
Not many travelers view Fairyland Point because it is not convenient to find or get to. Most visitors prefer it for just that reason. What people find so appealing to hike this trail though, is the fact that it offers absolutely stunning views that you can't get at any of the other points in the park. Here you'll see The Sinking Ship formation and the tallest hoodoo in the park, named The Boat Mesa. You've come this far, you don't want to miss this spectacular spot.
