Hotels in Ukraine's Towns and Cities

Every Ukrainian town where over 20, 000 people live has, at least, one hotel. In small towns, these hotels are normally of the Soviet time and can be inexpensive - $10 USD and up for a double room. Bigger towns (50-200 thousand residents) normally have several hotels: some are privately owned, others are state-run.
Service in Ukrainian hotels
As a rule, there is usually no English-speaking staff in state-run hotels in small towns, and they offer customers USSR standards of service. If you are a risk-taking young backpacker who is pressed for money, you might not care that there is no telephone, the beds are somewhat short, the closet door is broken, there's no hot water, and the temperature in your room is around 16°C. Nevertheless, other categories of foreign visitors are commonly displeased with the service and living conditions in such hotels.
Private hotels are often — but not always — both more expensive and have higher service standards. Some privately owned hotels Ukrainian towns and cities are very good, but English-speaking staff is unlikely to work there. In the Carpathians, there are many wonderful family-run privately owned inns with hospitable hosts and very good living conditions. Outside the Carpathians, still, family-run inns and guesthouses are almost nonexistent.
Up-to-date hotels observing the western pattern service and living conditions can be found in all large cities of Ukraine and in resort areas of Crimea and the Carpathians. These hotels often have higher price rates than the same ones abroad. This is because the country lacks three, four, and five-star hotels, and hence travellers would rather pay more for good living conditions.
Making hotel reservations in Ukraine
In towns and cities, you can reserve a room right on arrival to the hotel, providing you have a passport. Yet, in big cities like Kiev and Odessa you should book beforehand. Also, remember that there are no tourist information agencies that can help you book a room (except for an agency at Lviv airport).
Booking procedures may differ, depending on a hotel. You can make a reservation over the telephone by providing your name and the time you are likely to arrive. If you are late, they may give your room to someone else.
Rooms in modern hotels generally need to be booked via a travel agency or online on either the hotel's site or the website of a travel agency.
