Take A Road Trip Vacation
Go to: Previous Article Next Article
Most of the time we think that the time we spend on the road during a vacation is just time wasted. Some of us would rather travel at night to avoid all the traffic, keep to the highways for speed and take along gadgets and books to keep the passengers from getting bored.
Most of us forget that part of our vacation can be about the journey and not just the destination, turning the trip into the vacation and spending quality time with your family is possible.
With family scattered all over the country, we may visit them during long weekends or on the holidays but rarely do we plan our vacations around those trips. Consider changing your approach to these visits. Instead of making them a tiring trip there and back, plan a vacation route along the way and take your time reaching their home.
True, it does seem like the plot to the National Lampoon movie "Vacation", but it can turn a mundane drive into an unforgettable experience. "Road trips" are very popular among young adults and college students, they use it as an excuse to either spend time alone or with friends, listen to music or talk.
Consider doing the same with your family.
When thinking about visiting parents, siblings or in-laws in another state, take the time to plan activities along the way to make it more memorable. Rather than hopping on the nearest interstate, look for alternate routes that will take you through parts of the country you're unfamiliar with. Get the entire family to participate in looking for places you'd like to go, things you'd like to do, like festivals, diners, historical landmarks or whatever you'd like, which is en route to where you might be headed. Turn what might be a one-day drive into a multi-day adventure.
On the way home, drive another way. Take time to enjoy a different selection of locales along the way.
For a more enjoyable experience, agree that no one will set up barriers around themselves, especially in the car. No escaping into a movie, game, book or cell phone. Some might consider that to be too tasking, a compromise can be made as to the limit of the escapes. A healthy way of getting to know each other is by experiencing each others musical tastes, take turns in picking the music or rotate the CDs. Share the music you listened to in your childhood and ask your children about their selections. It may open doors for more conversation. Make frequent stops, whether for food, a bathroom break, or to take pictures of an interesting cloud formation.
If your family fancies the outdoors, have a couple of sleeping bags and a tent ready, just so that you don't have to worry about sticking to a certain plan. If it must be a hotel, then locate them during the planning phase and make reservations. Don't let the search for a place to sleep ruin an evening or put you on the road tired the next day.
