Hospitable, brave and hardworking, the ethnic people of Miao is known to the world as some of Asia's best tribal silver jewel artisans.
As a matter of fact, what makes Miaos even more famous are their primitive customs they've been living with for over 5, 000 years. The people is among the first to settle down along the Yellow River, the cradle of Chinese civilization.
Of those customs, the way they court is probably the most unique.
As the name indicates, the one thing that a Lusheng Festival can't go without is Lusheng. Lusheng is a traditional wind instrument of the Miaos. Lusheng has been around in the Miao tribes for nearly 2, 000 years, as a recent archaeological excavation shows.
A Lusheng is a fun instrument to play with. It is made of a set of 8 bamboo tubes with holes on each one. The holes work much the same as a flute's. The tubes are encased in a bamboo resonance canister, which help the tubes to produce its signature sharp and clear sound that travel several miles.
Both single men and women take the festival seriously, as it could be their chance to find their prospective partner. The men play Lusheng to announce the start of the festival. Girls dance to the rhythm in circles. The mood gets bright and joyful very soon.
The dance steps are simple and lively: one step backward, three steps forward, kick a leg, turn around, and clap hands.
When a girl dances, she selects her favorite Lusheng player. He who has the best playing skills often wins her heart. Slowly, she dances to his side, and ties her ribbon to his waist. Then she holds one end of the ribbon.
If the young man has the same hots for the girl, he let the girl hold to one end of the ribbon, and sing antiphonal songs with her.
If the young man is attracted to some girl, he sings antiphonal songs with her as a sign of acceptance. The songs are often composed off the cuff.
