Dating Tip: How to Handle Your Crush

Recently my grandmother set me up with one of her workmates, Justine. My parents and I had gone over to my grandmother's house for lunch. When we arrived at her house she mentioned that she'd also invited Justine.
The way my grandmother went on praising Justine I immediately realized that I was being paired off with her.
As it turns out Justine was a pretty woman with beautiful brown eyes and a lively smile. She loved to paint and travel around the world, and her ambition was to become a travel writer.
It was easy to flirt with her, and later that night I couldn't get her out of my mind. I felt so alive, and I imagined both of us living in a house beside the sea in Sicily.
That's when I knew. It was a crush. I had all the familiar symptoms: racing heartbeat, inability to focus, a tingling in my groin, light-headedness and rampant fantasising. I didn't know the first thing about this woman or what she's like, and already in my mind we're going out.
According to Beverly Palmer, a clinical psychologist at California State University, "A crush is bred on lack of knowledge. It's driven by unrequited love and that unrequitedness, that secrecy, keeps it fuelled."
Don't think for a moment that your crush is true love. It's just a lovely dream fed by imagination and lust. Just as dreams evaporate when you open your eyes, so too will your crush fade away in the harsh light of reality.
So what to do? If you do nothing you must bear the pain of unrequited love. But if you pursue the object of your affection, you might find that the real person can't live up to the perfect image of them you have put on a pedestal in your mind.
So if you do decide to act on your crush keep an open mind. The object of your crush probably won't be the person you imagined them to be. But they might be an exciting proposition nonetheless.
And if you decide not to approach your crushee, just revel in the fantasy. A crush will certainly make your life more interesting. The prospect of a chance encounter makes the senses tingle.
